There’s A House Under Those Leaves

Front After Clearing

Not that we were ever really in doubt about there being a home under the mass of foliage growing up around Crowder House, but as to the state of the building hidden by it, that was another matter. We’re pleased to report that the ivy and other plants have not done any significant damage to the building or the structure. Even the damp basement is slowly drying up with the removal of greens, opened windows and a dehumidifier. It isn’t necessarily a permanent solution, but it will assist us in the interim.

We hope to find someone soon to manage the roof repairs, and then we will have some more information on matters up there. We expect that to be the one place where the vines did mange to harm Crowder House.

Below are some before and after shots of the area around the house. Jason Taylor, a local lawn maintenance service provider, is helping us out with reclaiming the lawn.

The shack to the right is still in a questionable state, but as for the brick on the south side of Crowder House, we are quite pleased. Even the stone foundation has turned out to be quite attractive.

There is also a second entrance to the right at the front of the house that can now be seen. Our plan is to build a veranda in the next couple of years, providing access to both doors.

I have been looking for before shots of the front lawn that do the recent clearing of it justice, but to no avail. Most of the pictures that we took before it was cleared show an unidentifiable jungle of Golden Rod and other plants. The video clip below, in which I experimented with zoom for no apparent reason and is better not watched by anyone with motion sickness issues, provides some measure of the wilderness that was:

We are making progress – slowly. A friend, who shall be heretofore be known as Carlotta, helped strip another door upstairs this week. It is with somewhat tapered hope that we might begin painting next week.

Will keep you posted!
